The very
important archeological place, Paestum, located
in the Sele plain about 40km south of
Salerno, is also
famous as a summer resort with its large
beach, lined with pine wood and rich of hotels
and outdoor facilities.
The town was founded by the Dorics in 650 B.C.
under the name of Poseidonia. With
its impressive and solemn churches and its
splendidly preserved walls, Paestum is one of
the most famous and important archaeological
sites in Italy. The ruins of Paestum include the
walls, four majestic and well-preserved temples,
other religious buildings, the amphitheatre and
the Via Sacra, in addition to other minor
remains. The National Museum collects the
valuable finds from the town.
